Morihata: a couple building a bridge between Japanese craft and the rest of the world
Morihata was founded in 2005 by Yuka and Kaz Morihata, a wife-and-husband team who met as students at the Rhode Island School of Design and worked in design and architecture in New York and Tokyo. When they returned to Japan, Yuka rediscovered the craftsmanship she'd grown up around.
Rather than make things themselves, they represent a carefully chosen list of Japanese makers, bringing work that rarely leaves Japan to the rest of the world.
The range tells the story: binchotan charcoal made the traditional way from ubame oak in Wakayama's Kishu region; scrub towels and mitts woven from Sasawashi, a blend of washi paper and kumazasa plant fibre; HA KO paper incense you light like a leaf; incense cords made from washi on the island of Awaji.
Everything crafted with intent, and built to be used.
