Puebco: the Japanese brand turning old war materials into objects worth keeping
Founded in Tokyo in 2007, Puebco builds its entire aesthetic around one idea: discarded things deserve a second life and that second life can be more beautiful than the first.
Designer Hirotaka Tanaka sources materials that most brands would walk past: vintage parachute fabric, old cargo belt straps, industrial cooking oil containers, truck seat covers from India. These aren't accent details. The material is the design.
Each product is handmade, mostly in India, and carries the texture and patina of its previous life. Muted colours, raw surfaces, utility shapes. Nothing shouts. Everything has weight. The result is a range of objects -bags, storage, homewares, apparel- that look like they've already outlasted a dozen design movements, and will outlast a dozen more.
Puebco doesn't make things that pretend to be new. That's exactly the point.
